ACCELERATION/DECELERATION

This often occurs during car accidents. The brain moves inside the skull, smashing forwards and then backwards, rebounding against the skull. This causes damage to both the front and the back of the brain and is associated with diffuse axonal injury. Also see coup-countercoup injury.
